I did not start college with a master plan.
Like many students, my strategy was simple: work hard, earn solid grades, and still have a social life. That worked well enough at first. I went to class, memorized what I could, and rushed from one deadline to the next. Most semesters, I earned mostly B’s.
I was not studying all the time. But when exams or papers clustered together, the stress hit hard. Finals weeks were exhausting, and cramming felt like the only option.
I wanted better results, but I was not willing to give up my life to get them.
At some point during my second semester of college, I started experimenting. I knew rereading notes was wasting my time, and I could tell that hard exam questions required more than memorization or stacks of flashcards.
So I began paying closer attention to what actually helped me understand, learn, and remember the material.
There was no internet.
No AI.
No study strategy videos.
Just lectures, textbooks, and a lot of trial and error.
Over time, I could feel things shifting. I was not just working hard. I was working smarter. My study time became more focused, targeted, and interactive. I could tell I was learning more during each study session, not just getting by.
The real breakthroughs came when several pieces finally came together.
I started sooner instead of waiting for pressure to force me.
I studied in places with fewer distractions.
I got consistent sleep on school nights.
I spaced out my studying so my brain had time to actually learn instead of panic.
Those small, repeatable changes compounded.
I went from earning one A per semester to five A’s in a single semester, and I stayed there. I remained on the Dean’s List through graduate school with a 4.0 GPA.
Even more importantly, my stress dropped and my confidence skyrocketed. I no longer felt intimidated by harder classes because I knew how to break material down, engage with it deeply, and make it stick.
Once I learned how to study strategically, everything felt different.
That transformation shaped the rest of my career.
I earned my master’s degree in education, taught in public schools for nine years, and then spent twelve years teaching learning strategies and executive function skills in The Ohio State University’s Department of Educational Psychology. During that time, I worked with over a thousand students.
I saw the same pattern again and again.
Students were putting in long hours at their desks. They reread notes, reviewed slides, memorized flashcards, and tried to keep up. Yet they still felt unsure walking into exams, especially when questions required deeper thinking and true mastery.
For most students, the jump from high school to college is steep.
In high school, learning is guided through worksheets, activities, quizzes, discussions, and review sheets. In college, students are given lectures and textbooks and expected to figure out how to understand and remember everything on their own.
In faster paced and more complex college courses, high school study strategies stop working. Hardworking students know they are putting in the time, but they are unsure what to do differently when results do not improve.
Studying longer and working harder is not the answer.
What students truly need is a clear plan of attack. A simple, repeatable system that shows them how to engage with material and when to study, so learning actually sticks without cramming.
Through Getting Laser Focused, I coach high school and college students across all majors. When learning feels hard for a student, that is what matters.
I help students learn how to:
Understand material deeply so they can answer questions that require critical thinking, not just recall
Identify what they know and what they do not know yet, so they can target their study time efficiently
Adjust their approach as classes become more complex instead of doubling down on strategies that no longer work
Manage time, focus, distractions, and sleep intentionally, rather than relying on last minute pressure
Prepare strategically for exams without cramming, so confidence comes from mastery
As these skills build over time, many students tell me they reduce their total study time by around 40 percent, while feeling calmer, more confident, and more in control of their learning.
I see it in how they talk about their classes.
In the questions they ask.
In the weekly wins they celebrate.
What I teach is what I wish someone had taught me earlier.
Learning how to learn and get things done are teachable skills. When students know how and when to study, learning can get easier, even as classes get harder. They stop doubting themselves and start seeing what they are truly capable of.
Every student has a unique story.
And it matters.
Now that you understand there is a faster way to the success you've always wanted...
using highly effective study strategies, you can avoid studying longer and harder, and get
on a direct path to the test scores you really want !
